Useful tools for those starting out

Craft Knives

This is a collection of various knives which I use. Tamiya and Olfa are related brands, and most Tamiya knives are actually re-brands of Olfa's craft knives. I genuinely prefer Olfa to most any other brand. Exacto as a brand has gone down hill in terms of quality but still charges a premium. Fiskars is ok - but still pricey. I would recommend Excell brand knifes and blade refills, as they are still quite good for the price. If you need replacement #11 blades, you can't go wrong with some Excell double honed blades. Consider keeping a cheap utility or box cutting knife for 'grunt' work like opening boxes and packaging. Don't use your art knives on grunt work; and try to use a fresh sharp blade on each project.
