Home Studio

This is the DIY setup I've put together to film/stream discussion panels at Chunky Fringe (a Teletext get-together in Harrow, UK), but it might also work for plenty of other use cases, like podcasts (they don't all have to be facing front).

I'd recommend the 2.8-12mm lenses for when you're quite close to the tripod, say a metre or two away (e.g. podcasts), as they have more aberration at full zoom. The 6.0-22mm lenses gave a much crisper image of the panel on the day (who were about seven metres away, I think?)

The "Nemcam"

I was lent these by a musician friend at a gig, and I was so impressed I bought a set for myself! I'm rarely that impressed, genuinely.

Wireless sets for instruments are not exactly new, they've been around for donkey's years. But I've never been interested, because of the faff of a belt pack and a thin wire crossing my chest to get to the violin. It's always felt like the worst of both worlds! I'd rather just have one single standard instrument cable, that I'm less likely to break because it's not a thin wispy thing dangling around to catch on my bow. Plus I'd probably forget to put in fresh batteries, and the wireless set would run out anyway.

These Lekato wireless sets (and similar) solve all of those problems. They're lightweight, rechargeable, and plug straight in to the instrument. Truly wireless. It's literally like having an air cable. And also, despite their tiny size, they've easily lasted an entire gig with charge to spare (granted, they're brand new right now, but as they naturally get less new, they can always be charged at half time). They're digital, so you don't get the weird buzzing that you can sometimes get with analogue VHF/UHF systems. I've never experienced dropouts when moving around, even close to other equipment. I've been using them for months now, without any issues, and everyone I've shown them to has been equally impressed!

I bought this after the very hot summer of 2022. I loved my 20-year-old case, but having to remove panels that weren't supposed to be removable, just to keep it cool enough throughout the work day (let alone for streaming) was the final straw!

This case had enough room to transfer over all six of my spinning hard disks, otherwise I'd have had some serious file reorganisation to do. Plus I got all the newfangled advantages of having the power supply on the bottom (that's newfangled to me), dust filters and meshes, and more places to put fans. The window and the pretty lights were a bonus.
